Technorati: Coming Out
RSS Feed for calendar, animated ticker
For quite a while, I had been meaning to add some kind of ticker to the Erie Gay News site for upcoming events. One of the things that I think is our strong points is that we have a fairly complete calendar of events, and I wanted to drive home the idea that we are a good source for what's coming up. I wasn't sure about creating the animated ticker, but then I found a script that displayed an RSS feed. Hmm. I didn't have an RSS feed for the calendar, but I did have one for the articles. Howeve

Talk About Following ‘Special Interests’…
Posted by Lynda on September 7, 2008 How religion guides Palin By Manya A. Brachear | Chicago Tribune reporter September 6, 2008 When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin promised to lead the nation with a “servant’s heart,” evangelical Christians immediately recognized her as one of their own. Whether before an audience of ministry students or on a national stage at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, the 44-year-old Palin speaks fluently about her faith, striking chords with phrases that ev

Will church-themed bars bring boozers closer to God?
BIRMINGHAM Cathedral wants to launch a chain of cathedral-style wine bars in a bid to attract more worshippers. The idea is part of a push to re-vitalise the image of the famous cathedral and to market it in the 21st century. But traditionalist groups say it reeks of ‘desperation’ and will be ineffective in spreading the true Christian message. A gay couple in a church-themed bar in Spain (see context below). Two weeks after shocking the diving world by winning the gold medal in Olympic platform diving, Australian Matthew Mitcham has been honored with a stamp but has yet to secure a sponsorship deal, though one is rumored. Mitcham, 20, will also earn another $17,400 in a bonus paid by Adidas. So far, though, Mitcham, who won the gold medal with a dazzling fi

BEING AN ALLEGED VICTIM OF ISLAMOPHOBIA SURE PAYS IN THE UK
In the UK an Asian lawyer who was suspended after telling a court security guard she was a ‘friend of Bin Laden’s’ has won a £600,000 record pay out for race discrimination. Halima Aziz (above), made the remark as she arrived at Bradford magistrates’ court in Yorkshire only a fortnight after the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington. Populist Go the Weasels by digby
Populist Go the Weasels by digby Michael Kazin, historian and expert on American populism, has written a very interesting article about where we've been --- and where this election may be headed. Populism in America is nearly as old as the republic itself. Since President Andrew Jackson’s epic battle to shut down the “money power” symbolized by the Second Bank of the United States in 1833, politicians and citizen-activists have voiced their outrage about the “elites” who ignored, corrupted or

An Unwelcome Visitor this Morning
Doug and I slept in very late for the first time in years and we had a very late breakfast. Just as I was having my second cup of coffee and reading the paper, our doorbell rang. I answered the door and it was a guy who asked me if I knew what Prop. 8 was. Of course, I am extremely aware of what Prop. 8 is--it is a ballot that states that if passed, it will take away the rights of gays and lesbians to marry. It is a right we already have in this state. I told him I knew what it was and ask

In "The Advocate": Minority Report
In "The Advocate": Minority Report Our latest column in the Sept. 23 issue of The Advocate. Of the 50 men and women who occupy governor’s mansions in the United States, only two, David Paterson and Deval Patrick, are black. And these two black men are arguably the most gay-friendly to ever be governor—including New Jersey’s Jim McGreevey, who came around to gay rights only after coming out and leaving office Without fanfare, Patrick and Paterson are reframing the struggle for equality as

Behind Me
Behind Me Posted on: September 06, 2008 Copyright © 2008 Sticky Pen From the top of the landing I could see everyone walk by. A tall dark haired boy passed and looked up to where I was standing. Oh please let him come up, I thought to myself. I was getting hard just thinking about kneeling between his long muscular legs. I looked the other way and shifted my books from one hand to the other, trying my best to look nonchalant. I glanced back down as he approached the stairs and went into one of

Gunning to Lose
Last evening, I listened to a local radio talk show here in Los Angeles. The show has a conservative orientation, but it's not what I would call "hard" right, like Limbaugh or Hannity. It's moderately conservative, and the commentary falls well within the boundaries of sanity most of the time (perhaps generous boundaries at moments, but it is not cringe-inducing as a rule). The show offers views that I almost always disagree with, but they are views well within accepted and acceptable America

Looking for a bit more diversity
Within a couple of weeks, all the building work on boyfriend S's house should be complete, so he'll be moving into his new home. However a few weeks ago, a week or two after I met M, boyfriend S left me alone for the night when he went to visit his parents. As I said in the post about my hook-up with M, although I love boyfriend P, he lives in another country. Boyfriend P also has other men in his life too, so it's very unclear where that relationship is headed. With all these facts in my mind, t

Pastor Grant Swank is an anti-American bitch!
A pissant bitch, at that. Why do I say that? Well, you read this headline and tell me if it means anything, in English, which Grant Swank supposedly speaks: Sarah Palin: Muslim B. Hussein Gagged Jihad in any Speech My favorite kind of stupid fundamentalist “Christian” dickhole is the kind who tries to speak English and fails. I made fun of Grant Swank the other day for getting big gay bonerz for Levi Johnston, Bristol Palin’s redneck sperm donor. It’s time to step on his poorly made brain agai
