Lesbian activist Del Martin dies as poll shows Proposition 8 headed for defeat...

Thu, 08/28/2008 - 17:41
I'm sad to report that Del Martin, a woman who was part of the first legal gay marriage in California when she married her partner of 55 years in June, died Wednesday. It's a beautiful thing though that she was able to get married to Phyllis Lyon before she passed on at age of 87 and got to be a part of history. Del helped found the pioneering lesbian-rights group the Daughters of Bilitis. Ms. Lyon, 83, said in a statement, "I am devastated, but I take some solace in knowing we were able to

Ore. Tribe Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

Thu, 08/28/2008 - 17:01
abcnews.go.com The Coquille Indian Tribe now not only recognizes legal same-sex unions from state and federal governments, but it will soon be handing out its own marriage licenses not only to heterosexual couples, but to homosexual couples as well. Before the tribe ruled on Kitzen Branting's request in May, the Coquilles did not have a policy defining marriage and did not perform ceremonies or hand out marriage licenses of any kind. Like most other American Indian tribes, the Coquilles… http:

Marriage for some is not for the points. It's for the health insurance. [link] Here is Posner on the economics of marriage, gay marriage, polygamy, etc. and a case for privatizing the whole affair. Here is Becker on the same subject. Here is the latest from the NCPA on the marriage tax.

Queer Town: The Unexpected Twists of Gay Marriage by Patrick Range McDonald August 28, 2008 8:00 AM Whenever the accepted norms of society are changed, something unexpected always seems to pop up. With gay marriage in California, this truism of sorts is already starting to play out. According to a report in the Sacramento-based Capitol Weekly, the California Department of Corrections has now given the green light for gay prisoners to wed their same sex partners. The new policy is undoubtedly

Californians Split on Marriage, Oppose Ban August 28th, 2008 Californians are evenly divided on gay and lesban marriage, but overwhelmingly oppose taking the right away, according to the latest survey by the Public Policy Institute of California. I Have a Dream

Sometimes I wonder, who will be the one to march on Washington, to speak out, to be heard, to be seen, to champion the rights of LGBT people, to make the case, to speak the truth, and to certify that everyone knows our dreams are the same as those of our heterosexual neighbors. That we are no different. That our wants and desires for the future are no different. That our supposed differences are merely a construct of political action groups; parasites on a teaching of a man who may or may

LGBT Pioneer Dies

Thu, 08/28/2008 - 14:11
Del Martin, one-half of the first lesbian couple to legally marry in the state of California earlier this summer, died Wednesday at 87. Martin (on the left) and her partner of more than 50 years, Phyllis Lyon, were married by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Pictures of the ceremony were published worldwide. No doubt, it came as a surprise to some in the more remote caves of the world. It was the perfect picture of two grandmotherly women exchanging rings and cutting cake. It’s what we’ve

Olavo de Carvalho on the revolutionary mind

Olavo de Carvalho’s lecture: The structure of the revolutionary mind   By Donald Hank Even the best of observers have trouble figuring out what the Left is, or what the difference between left and right is, or what these concepts even mean any more. Great strides have been made recently, however, with the recognition, among the most astute observers, that Hitler’s Third Reich is by no means an example of rightwing ideology and policies in action, contrary to current political doctrine. I don't know how I just bursted into tears upon hearing the news. It has never happened before, not even when my own grandma kicked the bucket last Christmas. Del Martin passed away today. The courageous civil rights pioneer who, amongst other things, fought to have homosexuality removed from the American Psychiatric Association's list of mental illness. It was only back in June, that Del and Phyllis, her lesbian partner of 55 years, finally got to tie the knot legally in San Francisco.

AZ. Anti-Gay Ballot Measure To Mention That Gay Nups Already Banned

Thu, 08/28/2008 - 00:06
Words, they say, matter - especially when dealing with potentially discriminatory legislation: Arizona voters will be told when they go to the polls that it already is illegal for gays to marry in this state. Secretary of State Jan Brewer agreed late Tuesday to add that fact to the description of Proposition 102 that will appear on the November ballots. Approval would add a same-sex-marriage ban to the state constitution. Brewer — along with supporters of the measure — originally did not w

Despite gays' 'assaults,' Mass Dems live to share marriage tale

Wed, 08/27/2008 - 23:50
So this is pretty cool: During the roll call of the states during today's presidential nominating process, Massachusetts' Dem delegation (led by Sen. Therese Murray) made a point of mentioning that the Bay State was the first in the nation to move towards marriage equality. Politicker MA has more on that and other state mentions: Obama edges Clinton among Mass. delegates, 65 to 52 [Politicker MA] Dems who are not only okay with the fair and equal concept, but actually CELEBRATING their role

Anti-gay marriage group stays out of latest petition drive

Wed, 08/27/2008 - 22:58
The South Coast Today BOSTON — The group that has led opposition to gay marriage says it will not participate in a petition drive to block out-of-state, same-sex couples from being married in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Family Institute said "there is no winning on this issue" because thousands of marriages will have taken place before the proposed ballot question could go to voters in November 2010. A group called MassResistance is organizing the petition drive to reinstate a 1913 law t
